Duiker Hunting in the Rainforest of Liberia

Our travel consultant Thomas Møllegaard has just returned from the rainforest in Liberia, where he tested this new and exciting hunting destination. Here it is possible to hunt several unique duiker species that can only be hunted in a few places in West Africa.

The trip was a great success and the hunting was both exciting and truly unique. Hunting in Liberia mainly takes place at night, when hunters stalk through the darkness in search of the shy duikers, which are typically most active during the dark hours, although they can also be encountered during the day. The local hunters also try to call the duikers using mouth calls, which is a fascinating experience to witness.

As the photos reveal, accommodation is in a primitive tented camp in the middle of the rainforest, where each hunter sleeps in his own two-man tent. During the stay, the local helpers in camp take very good care of the hunters. The camp cook prepares delicious meals using the harvested duikers and local ingredients. The whole trip feels like a real expedition, which makes the experience even more exciting. The climate is hot and the humidity extremely high, so many kilometres were walked in the pursuit of these unique duiker species.

Thomas travelled together with the hunters Martin and Jens, as well as photographer Thomas Lindy and taxidermist Kim Højland, who has extensive experience with hunting in Liberia. During the trip several different duiker species were harvested, including Zebra Duiker, Maxwell’s Duiker, Ogilby’s Duiker and Bay Duiker, and a Palm Civet was also taken. The hunting can be very challenging and requires patience, but it is also rewarding. The more time you spend hunting, the greater the chance of encountering the duikers living in the dense rainforest.

Kim Højland continued hunting in the rainforest with two other hunters and reportedly also had success. We look forward to sharing more photos and stories from their trip.

This type of hunt is not for first-time travellers to Africa.
