Kodiak Island

Katmai Guide Service offers fully guided hunts on federally permitted lands for brown bear, mountain goat, and Sitka black-tailed deer on Kodiak Island. They also offer brown bear and moose hunts in the Becharof National Wildlife Refuge, located along the southern boundary of Katmai National Park, as well as in the Aniakchak National Monument and the Meshik River Valley on the Alaska Peninsula.

The brown bear hunts on Kodiak Island take place within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, where the outfitter holds exclusive guiding rights and is the only outfitter authorized to guide hunters in these areas. To maintain the highest quality hunting experience and preserve the exceptional trophy potential of the region, only a very limited number of hunters are accommodated each season—typically three hunters during the spring season and three hunters during the fall season.

Most harvested bears measure between 9 and 9½ feet, but hunters have excellent opportunities to pursue truly exceptional trophy bears measuring 10 feet or more.

Kodiak Island has consistently produced some of the largest brown bears in the world, with trophy sizes ranking among the very best entries in the prestigious Boone & Crockett record books. The brown bear population on Kodiak remains strong and healthy, and hunters can expect to observe numerous mature bears throughout their hunt.
