Wild Water Buffalo (Oceania)

Scientific Name: Bubalus arnee

Subspecies: 1. Bubalus a. arnee: India. Introduced on Sri Lanka and in Tunesia. 2. Bubalus a. fulvus: Northern Assam (India). 3. Bubalus a. bubalis: Thailand, Laos, Kampuchea, Vietnam and Malaysia. 4. Bubalus a. hosei: Borneo. Introduced into northern Australia, Brasil and Argentine.

Habitat: Swamps, grassy jungle, marshy regions, alongside rivers.

Description: Large wild cattle weighing up to 900 kg and measuring up to 1,80 m over the shoulder. It may reach a total body length of 3 meters without tail (1 m). General colour greyish brown, often seen covered in mud. The horns are long, outwards projecting and upwards pointing towards the tip. In many areas domesticated.

Hunting method: Stalking, on elephantback, with beaters.
