Scientific Name: Cervus mariannus

Subspecies: Some authors class this deer as a subspecies under the Sambar (Cervus unicolor). However, we follow the classification of Grubb and Groves from 1982, where the Philippine Sambar is an individual species with 4 1. Cervus m. nigellus: Western Mindanao. 2. Cervus m. francianus: Mindanao. 3. Cervus m. barandanas: The Mindoro Islands. 4. Cervus m. mariannus: The Luzon Islands, introduced on the Caroline Islands.

Habitat: Open woodland and grassy plains.
