Cheetah (Asia)

Scientific Name: Acinonyx jubatus

Subspecies: Two subspecies have been described, one of which occurs in the Holarctic- Asian region: Acinonyx j. venaticus: Turkmeniya, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Transcaucasia and the Afghanistan border, Iraq to Syria, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon.

Habitat: Open semi-arid grassland, savanna, open woodlands, sometimes at the edge of wet areas.

Description: Big cat, with a slender body and long legs. It weighs between 40 and 70 kg and measures up to 70 cm over the shoulder. Reminiscent of a long-legged leopard. General colour yellowish brown to yellowish fawn with small round, dark spots. The ears are short. The underparts are buff to white, some individuals have darker markings. Characteristic black stripes on the head. The tail is long and for the most spotted. The Cheetah may reach a speed of 120 km/h, when hunting and is the fastest terrestial predator. When the Cheetah has made a kill and eaten its fill, it seldom returns to it. In the Middle East Cheetahs have been tamed and trained in hunting for gazelles.

Hunting method: Stalking. As the Cheetah seldom, if ever, returns to its kill, it is fruitless to lie in wait.

Hunting available in: Endangered in this region.
