Baird's Tapir

Scientific Name: Tapirus bairdii

Subspecies: None.

Distribution: Central America from southern Mexico through the Central American States along the Pacific coast-line to Equador and Columbia.

Habitat: Swampy and mountainous forests.

Description: Characteristic Tapir, with its trunk-like nose. General colour greyish brown with pale underparts, sides of head and throat. Very thick skin. Baird's Tapir is the largest of the 3 American Tapirs. Little known.

Hunting available in: Totally protected, due to excessive hunting. Washinton convention list 1.
