The Marco Polo Sheep (Ovis ammon polii) can be found in the mountains in the southern part of the contry, from the River Naryn to the border with China. The preferred habitat of argali is relatively flat, mountain plateaux, at an altitude of 3,500 – 4,500 m. above sea level

The Tien Shan argali (Ovis ammon karelini) is found in the western parts of the Tian Shan mountains. They are very similar in appearance to the Marco polo argali, but generally have thicker horns, which are more tightly curved.

Kyrgyzstan is also known to be home to Hume Argali (Ovis ammon humei), the northern border of its range is the River Naryn and the southern is the central part of the Ferganskiy mountains.
