Black-backed Jackal

Scientific Name: Canis mesomelas

Subspecies: None.

Distribution: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Habitat: Open savanna and light woodland.

Description: A brightly coloured jackal, with a rather fox-like head, and long ears, broad at their bases and pointed. It weighs around 10 kg and measures 45 cm over the shoulder. Head greyish, broad conspicuous dark mantle on upperparts from neck to tails, sharply defined from and in strong contrast to the rufous sides and limbs, widest over the shoulder narrowing backwards, this band is black, stippled with white, giveing a silvery appearance at a distance.

Hunting method: Pursch or lying in wait by carrion. Is often taken in connection with lion- or leopard hunting, or as an extra in connection with antelope hunting.

Hunting available in: All African countries with trophy hunting, excepting Zambia and the West African States.
