Swamp Deer

Scientific Name: Cervus duvauceli

Subspecies: 1. Cervus d. duvauceli: Northern India in Assam and along the Ganges. 2. Cervus d. branderii: Central India. 3. Cervus d. ranjitsinhi: Northern Bengal and Assam. 4. Cervus d. schomburgki: Central Thailand. Most authors consider this subspecies extinct, but scattered populations are assumed to still exist in the swamps of central Thailand.

Habitat: Along rivers and swamps at the edge of woods, wet grasslands.

Description: Large deer weighing up to 180 kg and measuring up to 1.20 m over the shoulder. It may reach a total body length of 2 meters without tail (15 cm). General colour brown. The antlers are forked and have several points.

Hunting method: Stalking and from the back of hunting elephants.
