Leopard Cat

Scientific Name: Prionailurus bengalensis

Subspecies: A total of four subspecies have been described, two of which occur in this region: 1. Prionailurus b. euptilura: Russia, the Amur-Ussuri region, north eastern and eastern China and Korea. 2. Prionailurus b. trevelyani: Nepal, Kashmir and southwestern Pakistan.

Habitat: Forests and jungles in low, hilly and mountainous regions.

Description: Medium sized wild cat weighing up to 7 kg and measuring up to 36 cm over the shoulder. It reaches a total body length of 90 cm, without tail (40 cm). General colour yellowish grey with distinct black markings. Underparts white with black markings.

Hunting method: With dogs, traps.
