Jackal, Golden (Oceania)

Scientific Name: Canis aureus

Subspecies: 19 subspecies have been described, but due to uncertainty about their individual status, we do not include them here.

Distribution: Indopacific region: India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand.

Habitat: Open steppe, undulating semi arid shrubland, marshes and mountainous forests.

Description: Almost the size of a fox, the Golden Jackal weighs up to 15 kg and measures up to 50 cm over the shoulder. It reaches a total body length of 1,05 m without tail (27 cm). General colour greyish to yellowish grey.

Hunting method: On a kill, with dogs, with eagles, on horseback. Often "side-trophy" in connection with hunting for other game.
