Gazelle, Mountain

Scientific Name: Gazella gazella

Subspecies: A total of 3 subspecies have been described, but due to uncertainty of their individual status, we do not include them here.

Distribution: Sinai, southern Arabia, Yemen, the islands of the Red Sea: Farsan and Hanish.

Habitat: Open steppe with shrub in undulating terrain up to 1.800 m.

Description: Small gazelle weighing up to 35 kg and measuring up to 80 cm over the shoulder. It reaches a total body length of 1 meter without tail (20 cm). General colour uniform greyish brown with lighter underparts and pale markings on the face. The antlers are are heavily ridged and bend backwards and upwards.

Hunting method: Formerly on horseback, with eagles or falcons. Today it is protected by law.
