Elephant (Oceania)

Scientific Name: Elephas maximus

Subspecies: 4 subspecies have been described: 1. Elephas m. maximus: Sri Lanka. 2. Elephas m. bengalensis: Nepal, India, China and Myanmar. 3. Elephas m. sumatranus: Sumatra, Java and Borneo. 4. Elephas m. hirsutus: Malaysia.

Habitat: Lowland and mountain forests (tropical forests as well as drier deciduous forests), savanna and grasslands.

Description: The Asian Elephant weighs up to5000 kg and measures up to 3 m. over the shoulder. It may reach a total body length of 6,50 m without tail (1,50 m). Compared to the African Elephant it is smaller in size, the ears are smaller and slightly pointed downwards. Only the male has tusks and the trunk is rounder.

Hunting method: Stalking, with hunting elephants. Protected by law in all areas of distribution.
