Crocodile, Nile

Scientific Name: Crocodylus niloticus

Subspecies: No subspecies are currently formally recognised, however up to seven have been proposed.

Distribution: The most common African crocodile, present over much of the sub-Saharan  Africa from Lake Nasser in Egypt and the River Nile Sudan to the north to the Okavango Delta of Botswana and the Olifants River of South Africa in the south.

Habitat: It is able to tolerate a broad range of freshwater, brackish and even saltwater habitats from small streams, marshes to large lakes.

Description: The world’s second largest reptile. On average the males are between 3.5m and 5m long, weighing 225 to 750kg. Specimens over 6 m long and up to 1,100kg have been recorded. Thick, scaly, armoured skin, powerful tail and elongated snout.

Hunting method: Baiting (from a hide) and stalking.
