Collared Peccary

Scientific Name: Tayassu tajacu

Subspecies: A total of 14 subspecies have been described, but due to uncertainty of their individual status, we do not include them here.

Distribution: From the southwestern States of USA through Central- and South America to northern Argentina.

Habitat: Dry as well as wet tropical primary forests, bushland.

Description: New world pig weighing up to 25 kg and measuring around 50 cm over the shoulder, reaching a total body length of 1 m. General colour dark blackish brown with a collar-like white band around the neck and white markings on the cheeks. The bristles are longer on the head and back than on the rest of the animal. The peccary has small tusks.

Hunting method: Stalking, lying in wait, with beaters and dogs.

Hunting available in: Southwestern USA, Mexico, some of the South American States. Washington convention list 2.
