Sable Antelope (Africa)

Scientific Name: Hippotragus niger

Subspecies: Hippotragus n. kirkii, Hippotragus n. roosevelti. Giant Sable (Hippotragus n. Variani) not described as it currently threatened with extinction. 

Distribution: South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya.

Habitat: Open or mixed bush and grassland, but is also found in miombo- and mopane forests.

Description: A large antelope, reaching a max. weight of 260 kg. and a shoulderheight of 130 - 140 cm. General colour glossy black, but in females and juvenile males coat is brown. Both sexes have white markings on the face. The horns are strongly ridged, rising vertically and sweeping backwards in a pronounced sable like curve.
