Scientific Name: Hystrix africae-australis

Sub - species: None

Distribution: Sub-saharan Africa, excluding the Namib desert. North to southern Kenya and Gabon.

Habitat: Found in most areas with vegetation, up to 200m above sea level. Prefers rocky hills and outcrops, as it can find shelter in caves and hollows during the day.

Description: The largest rodent in the region, with very characteristic long (up to 50cm) backwards pointing quills and spines. Generally brown in colour with  long white bristles grown backwards from the head, quills have white banding.  Body length 65 -85 cm, weight 18 -30 kg. On average, females are larger than males.
