Hyena, Brown

Scientific Name: Hyaena brunnea

Subspecies: None.

Distribution: South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Habitat: Dry savanna.

Description: A large hyena with a compact body and strong legs. It weighs around 70 kg and measures 80 cm over the shoulder. Head broad, muzzle short, long extremely pointed ears and a distincly sloping back, so characteristic for hyenas. Coat coarse and very shaggy, fairly plain coloured tawny with dark blackish brown spots. Hyenas mainly eat carrion, as they are able to eat and digest rotting meat. Only seldomly do they take prey themselves, if so it mainly consist of newly born antelope calves. Hyenas are able to crush even large bones with their very strong jaws.

Hunting method: Often taken in connection with lion hunting, but can also be hunted for its own sake by lying in wait by carrion.
