Egyptian goose

Scientific name: Alopochen aegyptiaca

Distribution: The Egyptian goose is originally from sub-saharan Africa and the Nile valley in Egypt. Over the last few centuries breeding populations have become established in north west Europe and the U.S.A.

Habitat: It is a common bird in South Africa, often found close to farmland close to streams, rivers and lakes. It mainly each plants such as grass, seeds and leaves.

Description: Its plumage can vary between different shades of brown and grey, it has a brown mask , a bark patch on its belly and large areas of white on its wings, that are most clearly seen in flight. It has long pale red legs. The Egyptian goose has a body weight of around 2.5cm and a wingspan of up to 1.4 meters. It is one of the most challenging birds to hunt in South Africa.
