Black Bear

Scientific Name: Ursus americanus

Subspecies: None.

Distribution: In thinly populated areas of North America and Mexico, with the exception of the arctic regions, the Central States and the East Coast of the USA.

Habitat: In the east, mainly in forests and marshes, in the west mainly in mountainous regions.

Description: The most common bear in America, weighing around 220 kg, and measuring up to 95 cm over the shoulder, reaching an average height of 1,80 m. Coat variable but mostly black (especially in the east, in the west the colour most often varies from cinnamon to black, and on Gribble Island B.C, the colour may be almost white). Near Yakutat Bay, Alaska the pelage may be almost bluish, hence the name "Blue Bear" or "Glacier Bear". Small white spots on the chest common. Claws and Face brownish.

Hunting method: Stalking, Lying in wait near bait (not always permitted), with dogs.
